Mr Brian Chau predominantly practises criminal law, with a particular focus on white‑collar and financial crimes, including commercial crime, fraud, corruption, money laundering, and matters involving the Securities and Futures Commission (SFC). His practice also covers a broad spectrum of general criminal work, such as violent offences, sexual offences, dangerous drugs, immigration matters, and departmental summonses. In addition, he serves as a Council Member of the Bar Council of the Hong Kong Bar Association and sits intermittently as a Deputy Magistrate.
Beyond his legal practice, Mr Chau is actively involved in public and community service through various government advisory and statutory bodies. His key current appointments include Chairman of the Appeal Tribunal Panel (Buildings); Chairman of the Appeal Tribunal under the Appeal Panel (Estate Agents Ordinance); Convenor of the Advisory Panel on Licensing of Hotels and Guesthouses under the Home Affairs Department; Supervisory Board Member of the Hong Kong Housing Society; and Member of its Special Committee on Elderly Housing. He also serves on the Insurance Appeals Tribunal and the Deposit Protection Appeals Tribunal. Furthermore, he is an Adjudicator of the Registration of Persons Tribunal under the Security Bureau and a School Manager of Yan Chai Hospital Tung Chi Ying Memorial Secondary School.
Mr Chau’s previous public service roles include Chairman of the Appeal Tribunal under the Appeal Panel (Housing). He has also served on the Criminal and Law Enforcement Injuries Compensation Boards of the Social Welfare Department; the Committee on the Promotion of Racial Harmony under the Home Affairs Department; the Licensing Appeals Board; and the Appeal Board Panel (District Cooling Services Ordinance) of the Environment and Ecology Bureau (formerly the Food and Health Bureau). Additionally, he was a member of the Non-local Higher and Professional Education Appeal Board of the Education Bureau, the Railway Objections Hearing Panel of the former Transport and Housing Bureau, and the Audit Committee of the Hong Kong Housing Society. He has also served as a Director of Yan Chai Hospital and as an Advisor to its Board of Directors.
